There are many issues of current and potential concern for property owners and water enthusiasts on Big Arbor Vitae Lake from boater safety to managing stormwater. However, some of the greatest concerns at this time are the needs to control the spread of invasive species and managing the beaver population.

In Spring of 2023, the aquatic ecologists of Onterra LLC surveyed Big Arbor Vitae Lake looking for Curly-Leaf Pondweed, an invasive species. Only a handful of plants were observed and removed, and no other invasive weeds were identified at that time.

As an organization, we should remain steadfast in our efforts to prevent invasive weeds from spreading. This requires paid workers to help educate users of the lake at our three boat landings as they trailer their boats. As other lakes in our area become overwhelmed with invasive weeds like Eurasian Milfoil, we are striving to stay free of invasive species despite the odds.

Beavers have also been a concern as of late. In recent years, these animals have dammed up the Northern tributaries flowing South into Big Arbor Vitae Lake. This type of blockage causes the water to become more stagnant than normal, and it will slow down the water flow between Big Arbor Vitae Lake and Little Arbor Vitae Lake through Link Creek. This situation can cause bacteria to grow during the warmer months. Therefore, beaver watch is crucial for the foreseeable future. If beavers are spotted, the DNR must be called to remove them immediately.

As a board, we are always looking for ways to improve the quality of our lake and our organization. In addition to educating people at the boat launches, we need to monitor the Northern tributaries for beaver activity. Any help with these two objections would be much appreciated. If you or someone you know would like to become more involved, please don’t hesitate to reach out to any of our board members or submit an inquiry form online. Someone will reach out to you within 3 business days.
